Mission & Scope
BOLAS & BANDEIRAS “kicks off” 2010 with the goal of disseminating commentaries upon the variegated strata of cultural surplus which arise from global soccer society—while also chiming in w/ more traditional sporting praise highlighting youthful vigor, graceful tackling, or incisive passing. Punctuated by the African Cup of Nations and this summer’s 2010 World Cup in South Africa, we aim to focus on soccer/football/fútbol/futebol in the southern hemisphere. Hopefully instead of traditional sports journalism, we can tease out various interrelated cultural undercurrents, touching on topics of economics, politics, music, religion, and food. Although the Eurocentrist priorities of football journalism are entirely unavoidable, we will attempt to resist this chauvinism, aiming to shed a little more light on the African and South American athletic activity that actually happens in Africa and South America.
